The stair was in pretty good shape, structurally, so, they sanded them with the rest of the floors. New Stairs and Rails in Philadelphia

Here's a fine example of a New Stair and Rail replacement in Philadelphia. We completely removed old staircases and handrails, and re-framed new openings for the brand-new shiny, rock-solid oak stairs to fit right in place. New Oak Handrail in Moorestown NJ. We left the oversized starting step and the stair treads intact.
Homeowner wanted a safer and more user-friendly, (and beautiful) handrail than the one that was original to the house, which was in bad shape. We left the posts also, but extended them to raise the rail 3-4 inches to bring it up to the required 34" from edge of stair nosing. We then installed the new rail "over-the-post" style. All new balusters freshly painted and secured, with a darker stain on the new rail gives a nice contrast to the lighter colored stair treads.
